In eddy current testing the most widely recognized model for axisymmetric problems is that of Dodd [3,4]. The eddy current probe is a circular air-cored coil wound with a rectangular cross-section. The conductor can have any number of layers and the geometries studied fall into two major categories: planar and coaxial cylindrical layers. Eddy current testing can be a powerful tool in a power plant’s maintenance program. Every year in the U.S. there are an estimated 7, plant outages attributed to tube failures, and such.

It can detect surface-breaking, near-surface, and far-surface defects. ECT probes don’t need to be in contact with the part under inspection. Eddy current testing can be used in applications other than flaw detection. Parts under test require only minimal preparation. The eddy current density, and thus the strength of the response from a flaw, is greatest on the surface of the metal being tested and declines with depth. It is mathematically convenient to define the “standard depth of penetration” where the eddy current is 1/e (37%) of its surface value. The standard depth of penetration in mm is given by theFile Size: KB.

Eddy current testing (ECT) detects flaws on a surface level and subsurface level, but it takes the right instruments to procure truly reliable data. Eddy current instruments can pinpoint underlying defects that would have gone unnoticed with other nondestructive testing (NDT) methods, including minuscule stress points that are harder to read. Several computer programs to aid in the design of eddy-current tests and probes have been written. The programs, written in Fortran, deal in various ways with the response to defects exhibited by four types of probes: the pancake probe, the reflection probe, the circumferential boreside probe, and the circumferential encircling probe.

Introduction Teaching of theoretical and practical basics of eddy current inspection is difficult due to the missing clearness of the method. Abstract: Eddy current testing (ECT) is one of the non-destructive evaluation techniques widely used, especially in oil and gas industries. It characterized noisy data to the less-than-perfect detection and as an indication of serious false alarm by: 5.

EDDY CURRENT ARRAYS FOR DEFECT DETECTION D.C. Hurley, K.H. Hedengren, and J.D. Young General Electric Corporate Research & Development P.O. Box 8 Schenectady, NY INTRODUCTION What was originally an inspection technique for large scale defects has become an increasingly miniaturized method.

The eddy current is created once the coil is brought into close proximity to the object being tested. If the eddy current flow is interrupted, that means the instrument has detected cracking, pitting or corrosion.

According to Olympus, a manufacturer of eddy current instruments, defects alter the pattern of the eddy current. The instrument then Author: Domenico Bellistri. Search the world's most comprehensive index of full-text books.
